ST. CATHERINE’S MONASTERY
The monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena is a historical monument emblematic of Arequipa, founded in 1579. It seems that time there has stopped and offers us the unique experience of knowing what the city was In XVII century. It presents unique architectural values in its cloisters, covers and in his temple. An apple from the Arequipa of the past is guarded by high walls that separate the sacred enclosure from the bustle urban that surrounds it.
Authentic symphony of volumes, imposing walls, solid flying buttresses, wide spaces, high vaults, cloisters in light and shadow. A crystal of White stone is the monastery: spherical domes, cylindrical vaults, bulky walls, base cubes, angles, edges, arches, buttresses, define this wonderful architecture of the Santa Catalina monastery that it is part of the cultural heritage of humanity.
